Coloradoans of All Ages Encouraged to Register for Step Up for Cancer Event

Over 30 Colorado Non-Profit Organizations Coming Together for Second Annual Collaborative Event

Denver, CO – July 7, 2010 – More than 30 Colorado non-profit cancer organizations are collaborating for one mission: to partner in the fight against cancer. Volunteers have been working for months planning the highly anticipated second annual Step Up for Cancer event, taking place at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Sunday, August 8th from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Step Up for Cancer is a multi-generational stair-climbing event and is open to families and individuals of all ages and brings awareness, funding and information to the Colorado cancer community. With an estimated 20,000 Coloradoans being diagnosed with cancer each year, this event was developed to bring non-profit organizations together to initiate awareness, fundraising and education in a healthy stair climbing event to ultimately, bridge a cure for cancer.

Step Up for Cancer organizers – 100% of whom are volunteers – are encouraging people to register now at www.stepupforcancer.org. Participants of Step Up for Cancer will have the unique opportunity to earn pledges for their cancer charity of choice by walking up and down a portion or all of the 33 rows of stairs at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Anyone – regardless of their age or athletic ability – is invited to walk, climb, or run the course circling the interior of the stadium. Prizes will be awarded for the Elite timed heat for competitive racers and there is also an Accessible course available for those who don’t want to walk stairs. Spectators will have an unprecedented sporting experience with a 360 degree view of all of the athletes competing, while being entertained by local bands Judge Roughneck and Pet Motel. Steppers will also have the opportunity to take part in restorative yoga and massage therapy.

“We are thrilled to be involved with Step Up for Cancer this year and look forwardto our team running the stairs and walking the course to raise money for Dani’s Foundation,” said Martha Simmons,Executive Director of Dani’s Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Denver that wasformed to defeat pediatric sarcomas and other rare forms of cancers that are affecting and taking the lives of children and young adults.   We love the concept behind Step Up for Cancer, as it’s such a unique opportunity to bring the Colorado cancer community together on one day and showcasing the  multitude of organizations that are working together  to educate and support Coloradoans fighting cancer.  Step Up for Cancer is a must do for any Coloradoan who wants to help in the battle against these horrific diseases!”

The non-profit organizations aligning and partnering with Step Up For Cancer will be situatedaround the stadium concourse creating “Community Villages” that will provide a vast amount ofinformation regarding the many facets of cancer including healthy living, prevention, early detection, treatment, access to care, patient and caregiver support, research, advocacy and  survivorship.

Cost for participation is $30 which includes a race day bib, exclusive Step Up for Cancer T-shirt and goodie bag. Individuals or teams can also raise additional funds by asking for pledges from friends and family, knowing that their pledges will go directly to their cancer charity of choice. Participants of all ages, stages and walks of life will unite to support the many participating cancer organizations and learn more about the cancer resources available. The event will take place from 7:00 am to 11:00 am at Dick’s Sporting Goods Parks with Presenting Sponsor Keybank and event partners including CBS4 Denver, KSE Charities, Anadarko and Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
