Megan was an energetic, happy, healthy girl before cancer entered her life. She enjoyed a broad spectrum of activities during her short life. She was an avid reader and a bright, hard-working student. She loved the Harry Potter Series, and read the first six books at least twice each.
Megan’s greatest passion was swimming. At the age of six, she joined the MACS swim team, where she trained and competed for seven years and enjoyed many enduring friendships.
Despite her petite size, Megan especially loved swimming distance events, and always finished with a smile.
Megan was proud to have qualified as a twelve year old to swim the mile in the 13-14 age division at the Colorado State Swimming Championships.
Megan completed her last meet in July of 2006, swimming the 400 IM and the mile, despite nagging pain in her knee. One month later, a malignant cancer called osteosarcoma was diagnosed in her femur.
Megan endured 13 grueling chemotherapy cycles and five weeks of radiation treatment.
Despite having the very best treatments available, Megan lost her life within 10 months of diagnosis, in July of 2007.
Megan did not get to read the final Harry Potter novel. Her dreams of regaining her health and returning to the pool were never realized.
Dani’s Foundation is committed to the memory of Dani Stell, Megan Dickey and the countless other children and young adults who are diagnosed daily with some form of pediatric sarcoma. The Foundation is working to raise the funding necessary that will find the cause and the cure for all forms of pediatric sarcomas; those rare forms of cancer that continue to affect and take the lives of children and young adults.
Osteosarcoma has seen very little progress in treatment methods for over 30 years! The most effective drugs in the current treatment protocol were developed over 60 years ago. Research in childhood cancers continues to be shamefully underfunded!
It is crucial that each of us become Champions in the race to find cures for these dreadful diseases that are affecting and taking the lives of these precious children and young adults who trust in our care. We need your support if we are to succeed.
