Friday night was a special one for a strong student at Johnston County’s Princeton High School. Senior Valerie King, 17, was crowned homecoming queen. For the past year, she’s been battling a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing Sarcoma.
King’s classmates say they didn’t nominate her because they felt sorry for her. They say it was because they love her and they admire her strength & courage.
“I couldn’t imagine being in her shoes,” said junior Daphne Evans. But, she still always smiled and happy every day I see her.”
King says their support has meant the world to her, especially since she’s been out of school for the past year.
“It feels great,” she said. “A year ago, I didn’t know if I’d be here.”
King is now cancer free, but she still gets screenings every few months. She’s on track to graduate with her class in the spring.
